Replacing Hot Water Valve Under Kitchen Sink

I have the faucet installed in the sink but not connected to the hot and cold water.

The water to a kitchen or bathroom sink is supplied through small copper or flexible neoprene tubes from a small control valve called a stop or shut off valve under the sink. Ignoring minor leaks can waste up to three gallons of water every day and can also lead to permanent water stains and rot under your sink. The hot and cold water supply under the sink is turned off at the valves. Typically there are two shut off valves installed underneath the kitchen sink.

Deburr the pipe with a deburring tool. The shut off valves are easy to spot. Put a bucket under the drain pipe. These inexpensive little valves rarely get used and when they do sometimes they leak.

Start with the kitchen sink shutoff valve turn the taps to the off position. My water supply valve under the kitchen sink leaks. The cold water supply line from the wall is dripping water slowly. Open the cabinet below the sink and remove anything stored there.

When cutting the supply line cut slowly and gently so. Cut the supply line with a pipe cutter leaving enough room between the escutcheon plate and the cut to allow installation of the valve fitting. One for the hot water supply and the other for the cold. You should see a large pipe usually made of pvc that has a vertical bend in it before running horizontally to the back wall or rarely down to the floor.

With a few household tool. Open the faucet to drain the line. Open the cold water handle of the kitchen faucet and let the water drain out if you re replacing the cold valve. To replace a shut off valve in the kitchen sink you need to locate the valves that turn the water supply on or off.

Turn off the next valve up the line which may be the main water supply valve. Look for two sets of valves that have oval shapes. Replacing a shut off valve compression valve or angle stop may seem like a daunting task but it really takes less than 5 minutes. Turn off the main water supply for the house.

Place a bucket under the old valve. There are two basic types straight stops and angle stops and these valves normally remain on and are seldom closed functioning maintenance free for years. If this happens to you you can simply replace the valve with a new valve that matches the old one.
