I ve seen this happen on numerous occasions twice to myself.

You could try to fit that chunk back in there.
Most vehicles use a simple glue joint compound to hold the rear view mirror onto the windshield and this adhesive can sometimes fail from excessive heat and humidity or simply from the passage of time.
Fortunately reattaching the rear view mirror is a fairly simple process but over the counter solutions available won t be a permanent.
Basically an alcohol wipe and some super glue.

You can use glue to put the mirror back on but if you live in an area were the weather changes from hot to cold or visa versa the windshield may crack.
